Places to See
Only 20 minutes drive from Lake Bolsena, Orvieto sits high on its throne of tufa, dominating the river valleys below. It is a town of classy shops and wonderful buildings and museums. The Cathedral is a special treasure though. It took 300 years to build; a tribute to the miracle in Bolsena. It features a magnificent facade and the new main doors, which are the work of the sculptor Emilio Greco.
However, what lies on top is only half the story. Take time to explore the caves and shafts underneath the streets and you will enter another world. In particular visit the Pozzo di San Patrizio, a well sunk 200 feet into the rock.
It is the only town where you park your car and take the lift or funicular railway 150 metres up to street level!
